How to apply

The Vocational upper secondary qualification in Music | 180 competence points

In Kuopio Conservatory it is possible to study upper secondary level vocational education either to become a Musician (classical or rhythm music) or Music Technologist. The Vocational upper secondary qualification in Music (180 competence points) provides basic professional skills and a general eligibility for higher education. Applying to study in the Vocational education and training in Music is done either in the continuous admission or in the joint application system. The vocational upper secondary qualification studies take from 2-3 years depending on the educational background of the applicant.

We require a strong musical foundation (instrumental or vocal skills, music literacy skills) from applicants. Those applying for studies in music technology must have strong interest in music technology and instrumental skills. Applicants must have finished at least primary school. It is also possible to enter the study program after high school or after completing an upper secondary level or a higher education degree.

    Language requirement

The teaching and studying language of our vocational education and training is Finnish. Application must include a certificate of Finnish skills in case Finnish is not applicant’s native language. We accept the following certificates:

    • Certificate of education accomplished in Finnish (primary school, vocational education, high school)
    • National Certificate of Language Proficiency (YKI3, proficiency scale B1.1–B1.2)

Please note that without acceptable certificate attached to the application we will not send an invitation to the entrance examination.

The National Certificate of Language Proficiency can be obtained by completing the YKI test. Tests are organized by Kuopio Adult Education Centre (Kuopion kansalaisopisto), for example. The applicant pays for the certificate himself/herself.

If it is noticed during the studies that the student’s language skills are not sufficient to complete the degree despite the support measures or certificates, the goal of the studies can be changed to complete vocational qualification units.
